TEA Time

After some time back at work on night shift I had two days off.  Normally, following a night shift I spend the first day lounging around the house acting like insomniac vegetable, trying vainly to get my sleep pattern back to normal.  Last week though the weather was too nice to ignore.  I had planned to go out on the Thursday to Stalybridge for the mythical Stalybridge tanks but the Wednesday was optional until Mark Franklin suggested a day at Water Orton together.  Therefore five hours after crashing out after the last shift I was awake again ready to spend the day on the footbridge just down the road from Water Orton station.  An excellent day was had with a huge variety of traffic which will keep the updates flowing easily for the next week.  One train that did run that I did not expect to see was the 11:41 Westerleigh to Lindsey Oil Refinery formed of a selection of new and old TEA bogie tank wagons, being hauled by 60 007.

The next day it was a later start, meeting up with Mark Franklin for a journey up to Manchester and then on to Stalybridge.  The aim of the day was to photograph the TEA tank wagons that run from Stalybridge to Immingham.  This flow has a dedicated fleet of wagons, with the inward working arriving at an hour which makes photography nigh impossible for someone after the wagons.  The departure from Stalybridge is a more sociable hour but one which only works during the long summer days.  The train itself, due to the nature of the sidings, departs from the terminal, heads west, and 40 minutes later reappears in Stalybridge station.  Due to this, myself and Mark walked from the station to an over-bridge just west of the terminal to get some shots looking down on top of the wagons.

We then returned to the station to await the tanks return, due to work going on at Stalybridge station there is a very useful speed restriction in place that slows down the train very usefully.  This was a godsend, there is something about these news tanks which make cameras focus systems go a bit haywire.  Both Mark and myself had the same issue where the camera would not focus on the target.  Out of 12 tanks in the consist I was able to shoot side views of 10 of them.

Whilst killing time waiting at Stalybridge station before walking up to the Countess Street over-bridge we were sat in the station buffet which also happens to be a pub, oh the heartache, when a late running 6M07 11:09 Roxby to Dean Lane ‘Binliner’ entered the station.  The pint was left on the table to run out into the sun to get some shots.
