In the mountains

Well I have started the mass wagon update from my trip to Erstfeld, Switzerland during October 2012.

As one would expect, being at a location that sees not just internal Swiss traffic but a lot of trans-European traffic, a number of countries are represented in the consist of trains.  Ironically, Austria, being next door only produced one wagon in the week I was at Erstfeld.

Erstfeld also has a wagon works where they do maintenance on wagons which have been pulled out of traffic.  When a train comes in with a wagon which has a fault on it the train is very quickly split, with the offending wagon removed, and the freight train departs again.  In the UK I hate to think how long this operation would take, at Erstfeld it was taking sub 20 minutes, a very impressive operation.   I get the impression the UK Health & Safety  people would have a heart attack at the operating practices of their shunters though.  The shot below doesn’t show it but this wagon with the shunter riding on it was probably moving at a good 30mph.

Next batch of uploading about to take place, when I make a start of the German registered wagons which passed through Erstfeld, Switzerland.
